WORKSHOP: Getting Perspective Right
When: January 22-24, Friday-Sunday
Where: Saluda, N.C.
Cost: $300.00
Medium: Oil and/or acrylic
Jim’s usual workshop is outdoors and is entitled “Painting Fast and Loose” with the aim of seeing large shapes and applying paint quickly and confidently.
However, the key to painting “fast and loose” with confidence is to have your drawing correct at the beginning.
Consequently, Jim will be joined by Chris Sherry, AIA architect from Atlanta, Ga. Chris teaches perspective at Johns Creek Art Center and Quinland Visual Art Center in Atlanta. Chris will conduct the first day of the workshop, and it will be all drawing.
In the next two days, Jim will teach the application of these drawing skills to achieve loose and spontaneous paintings.
The workshop will be held in Jim’s studio, which is on the second floor above The Saluda Grade Café, in Saluda, N.C.
Jim will do demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday, and there will be a general critique of the day’s work at the end of each day. The workshop price includes a tasty catered lunch by The Saluda Grade Café. Also included is a “get acquainted” gathering at Jim’s studio on Thursday night, Jan.21.
Airline service is available to Greenville/Spartanburg, S.C., which is about a forty five minute drive to Saluda, to Asheville, N. C., which is about twenty-five minutes from Saluda, and to Charlotte N.C., which is about one and a half hours from Saluda.
The Saluda area has a wonderful small inn, as well as bed and breakfasts, a newly remodeled motel, rental houses/cottages and cabins. Check out these options at: www.saluda.com for more information. Many hotel/motel chains are located on Interstate 26, just minutes from Saluda.
A list of needed equipment, as well as paint selections, brushes, etc. will be furnished after registration. Please email if interested; jimcarson@tds.net
A non-refundable deposit of $100 will hold your space. Please send your check (made out to Jim Carson) to 151 Archer Rd. Saluda, N.C. 28773. The balance of $200.00 is due two weeks prior to the workshop.
WORKSHOP: Painting Fast and Loose / Eliminating The Unnecessary
When: Thursday-Saturday, June 3 - 5, 2010 Where: Saluda, NC
Cost: $300.00
Medium: Oil and/or acrylic
Pablo Picasso said that "art is the elimination of the unnecessary". The focus of the workshop will be to attempt to master that principle. We will learn how to see large shapes and apply paint quickly and confidently. There will also be an emphasis on simplifying shapes, color harmony, painterly marks and composition.
The workshop will be taught for three full days in the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina. Participants will meet every day at Jim's studio and go to that day's plein air location. There will be daily demonstrations, lots of great painterly sites and a general critique of the day's work at the end of each day. The workshop price includes a tasty catered lunch brought to the site each day by the Saluda Grade Cafe. Also included is a " get acquainted" gathering at Jim's studio on Wednesday night, June 2nd.
In the event of rain, there is ample room in Jim’s studio. The workshop is open to all levels.
