News & Reviews NEWS: Jim won the "Best In Show" award recently at the Saluda Arts Festival. The festival this year was a juried show, and more than thirty artists were juried into the show. The award carried a $500 prize.

WORKSHOP: Getting Perspective Right When: June 25-27th, Friday-Sunday Where: Cashiers, N. C. Cost: $300.00 Medium: Oil and/or acrylic Jim’s usual workshop is outdoors and is entitled “Painting Fast and Loose” with the aim of seeing large shapes and applying paint quickly and confidently. However, the key to painting “fast and loose” with confidence is to have your drawing correct at the beginning. Consequently, Jim will be joined by Chris Sherry, AIA architect from Atlanta, Ga. Chris teaches perspective at Johns Creek Art Center and Queensland Visual Art Center in Atlanta. Chris will conduct the first day of the workshop, and it will be all drawing. In the next two days, Jim will teach the application of these drawing skills to achieve loose and spontaneous paintings. Pablo Picasso said that "art is the elimination of the unnecessary". The focus of the workshop will be to attempt to master that principle. We will learn how to see large shapes and apply paint quickly and confidently. There will also be an emphasis on simplifying shapes, color harmony, painterly marks and composition. The workshop will be taught for three full days in the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina. Participants will meet every day at Blue Valley Gallery, located in Mountain Laurels Shoppers on Hwy 107 in Cashiers, North Carolina. On the first drawing day we will meet inside. On the next two days we will go to that day's plain air location. There will be daily demonstrations, lots of great painterly sites and a general critique of the day's work at the end of each day.
